Why is the laying angle more important than the name of the material?
How to read 300gsm unidirectional material: where grain direction works, why cross zones require a separate solution and what to note on the drawing.
A unidirectional layer has a distinct working direction
In UD material, the main proportion of continuous fibers are oriented along one axis. This is where the layer most effectively absorbs the tensile load. The behavior across the fibers is more dependent on the matrix, the connection between the components and the auxiliary threads holding the web. Therefore, the same areal weight does not make the directions equivalent. NASA Engineering Materials considers fiber orientation as one of the key parameters of a composite structure: first determining the load path, then assigning ply directions under it.
Why a local detail can disrupt a beautiful design diagram
A hole, cutout, glued element or abrupt end of reinforcement interrupts part of the longitudinal fibers. The load is forced to bypass this zone and be transmitted through adjacent layers. If the package is assembled only from the longitudinal directions, the assembly may be sensitive to transverse tension and interlaminar shear. Therefore, it is important to show in the drawing not only the general outline, but also the attachment points, supports, reinforcement ends and places where forces are applied. It is around them that local adjustments to the laying pattern are usually required.
What does 300 g/m² mean in a real bag?
The 300 g/m² number describes the weight of reinforcement material per area, but does not automatically determine the thickness or strength of the finished part. The thickness depends on the resin system, compaction and the adopted technological regime. Areal weight affects the step of the reinforcement set: a lighter layer allows for a thinner distribution of directions, and a heavier layer quickly adds fiber along the selected axis. The choice of 12K or 24K should also be related to the available width, retention thread architecture, blank shape, and surface requirements.
How to formulate a problem for engineering selection
The best source material for a request is a diagram of the part with load arrows marked. Specify expected stiffness, weight limitations, temperature and moisture conditions, resin system type, and moulding method. If there is no design diagram yet, describe what elements the part connects and how it is secured. To purchase material, you need width, required length and an acceptable option of 12K or 24K. To manufacture the product, a complete package of initial data will be required, because one longitudinal layer does not determine the stability of the entire assembly.
