More fiber in a layer does not mean fewer questions about the package
Why does dense UD material 600 g/m² speed up the development of longitudinal reinforcement, but does not eliminate issues with the transverse, shear and interlayer zones of the part?
More fiber per layer is a technological choice
UD 600 g/m² is convenient to consider for large parts and thick reinforcements, where the main load is in a stable direction. One layer provides more reinforcement, so the package can be assembled in fewer operations. However, such savings do not automatically simplify the design. A heavy layer is more difficult to distribute along sharp transitions, and a small orientation error immediately affects a large proportion of longitudinal fibers. Before choosing a material, you need to divide the problem into a set of required reinforcement and the ability of the blank to repeat a specific geometry.
Longitudinal efficiency does not describe the entire assembly
A 2025 NASA report compared two specific IM7/PEKK systems—continuous and oriented short fiber—on several behavioral fronts. The proximity of some of the longitudinal characteristics did not eliminate the differences in the transverse, shear, and interlayer responses. For practical selection, this is a reminder: one strong characteristic cannot be transferred to an entire part or directly to another raw material. Holes, ends, adhesive joints and load entry zones force the material to work not only along the main axis.
How to build a package around connections and transitions
If the longitudinal UD layer ends abruptly, the force must transfer to the adjacent layers in a short distance. A smooth stepped end, additional directions and the correct overlap length help distribute this transmission, but the exact solution depends on the calculation. Near the bolt hole, orientation, edge distance, and lateral support are important. Near the gluing - the fit geometry and interlayer stresses. The 600gsm material is appropriate as part of a coherent package rather than as a universal replacement for several thinner layers.
What to indicate in a request for a factory programme
To calculate delivery, please indicate width, total volume, fiber option, resin system or downstream process and desired delivery time. For an engineering assessment, attach a diagram of the loads and highlight the locations of holes, inserts, supports and reinforcement ends. If the material must lie on a curved surface, add a tooling model or sections with radii. The price of a factory item is provided on quotation: it cannot be reliably determined only by density, because the supply is influenced by execution, width, batch and production conditions.
