What does T300 really mean in the sheet description

What does the T300 marking actually convey and why the characteristics of the fiber cannot be directly interpreted as the properties of a finished 2mm thick carbon fibre sheet.

T300 is the name of the fiber, not the data sheet of the finished panel

Toray's official data sheet for the T300 lists typical carbon fiber characteristics as 3,530 MPa tensile strength, 230 GPa modulus, 1.5 percent elongation, 1.76 g/cm³ density, and 7 µm fiber diameter. These values ​​help identify the class of the original reinforcement. They do not mean that the finished 2mm thick sheet has the same strength in all directions: between the individual fiber and the part there is weaving, resin, lay-up, curing and machining.

Why two T300 panels may perform differently

In the sheet, the fibers are collected in layers, and the layers are oriented according to the selected pattern. If most of the reinforcement lies in the 0- and 90-degree directions, the panel responds differently to angular loading than a quasi-isotropic stack. Resin system proportion, porosity, curing temperature and compaction quality also change the result. Therefore, the T300 designation is useful for material traceability, but the calculation requires data about the laminate itself. The fiber manufacturer specifically states that the tabulated values ​​are typical and should not automatically become guaranteed design tolerances.

What does a thickness of 2 mm give to a structure?

2mm sheet is often considered for panels, trims, brackets and instrument parts where a combination of low thickness and more stable geometry than 1mm sheet is required. But rigidity depends not only on thickness: the span, method of support and direction of reinforcement are important. A large cutout or hole close to the edge can determine the behavior of the part more than the difference between adjacent sheet sizes. Before choosing, it is useful to consider the actual mounting scheme, and not just the external dimensions.

How to request a verification sheet

In your request, please indicate the format, quantity, purpose, surface requirements and acceptable pattern orientation. If fiber grade is important, write it down as a separate requirement and request supporting documentation for the offered batch. For finished cutting, please attach DXF or STEP and PDF with critical dimensions. Availability refers to a specific stock entry; price is confirmed with your enquiry; the characteristics from the T300 data sheet describe the fiber. This separation protects the design from mistakenly transferring a headline value from the raw material to the finished part.
